Groveport 48 Worthington Kilbourne
25
After a wild night of coaching
moves, the Cruisers prevailed over the
Wolves from Worthington
Kilbourne by a score of 48-25. Both
teams
came into the match short
wrestlers, so the coaches continued to move
wrestlers around to give their
teams the best possible advantage.
The Cruisers took advantage of
the changes and won six of the nine
contested matches securing
their third straight OCC win.

Cruisers tested at
Top Gun Tournament
Placing at Top Gun
Matt Mossor (125) 3rd
Tommy Cunningham (145)
medically defaulted to 6th
Ben Trujillo (171) 7th
|
It was another tough weekend
of wrestling at the Top Gun Tournament held annually in Alliance. The Cruisers found out why this is considered
one of the toughest tournaments in Ohio.
Notable Performances by Cruisers
Matt Mossor (125),
despite an injury sustained during his Quarter Finals match, went on to
capture third place with a record of 5 1 for the tournament.
Tommy Cunningham (145)
had to medically default to 6th place after an injury forced him
to withdraw during his Semi-Finals match.
He was ahead in the match and appeared to be on his way to capturing
the championship.
Ben Trujillo (171) was able to wrestle well enough
to place seventh. He ended the
tournament with a record of 3-2, including a pin and a tech fall.

3rd Place Again!
But
it is not so bad! While the Cruisers
were still unable to win a tournament, they took 3rd place at the
Hilliard Darby Team Tournament. What
makes this outstanding is that they did it with only 8 wrestlers
competing. Several wrestlers attended
the JV tournament, while other varsity members are recovering from
injuries.
Even
with that, Groveport Cruisers had the MOST champions of any team
there. Four wrestlers were crowned
champions, Matt Mossor (125), Tim Weidner (140), and Tommy Cunningham
(145). Junior, Ben Trujillo (171),
took second place and sophomore Matt Ray (189) took third.
And
for the third time in four tournaments, a Cruiser Wrestler was named Most
Valuable Wrestler. Because of his
dominating win over state placer, Eric Wanner from Olentangy, Matt Mossor was
named MVW of the tournament!

First OCC Dual!!
Groveport 41 Grove City 32
Coming
back from a disappointing showing is the mark of great competitors and is
exactly what the Varsity wrestling team did this week at the seasons first
OCC Dual Meet. Despite their finish
at the State Duals, the Cruisers came back with a vengence and won 8 out of
12 contested matches. Giving them their first win over Grove City in 4 years.
Winning for the Cruisers:
Matt Mossor (125) , Ian Badger
(135), Tim Weidner (140), Tommiy Cunningham (145), Ben Trujillo (171), Matt
Ray (189), and Garrett Selfinger (215)

JV Wrestlers show what they
are made of!!
The Varsity was not the only
one that had a good night. Even
though there were only 3 JV matches, all three were won by the Cruisers.
Nick Reaper won by a pin.
Matt Brumm and TJ Lovings both
won by a decision.

It was a rough day at the
State Duals!
Unfortunately, the Cruisers were unable to field a
full team, which severely hampered their efforts to place at this event.
However, it did give the wrestlers an opportunity to see and wrestle some of
the best wrestlers in their weight classes from around the state. Several
Cruisers came away with at least 2 wins out of 3 matches. Those wrestlers included Matt Mossor
(125), Ian Badger (135), Ben Trujillo (171), and Matt Ray (189).
Now on to the OCC!!

The Varsity Team returned to
action after the holidays by competing at the always-tough Tiffin Columbian
Wendys Classic. Even though the team was disappointed with their third place
finish (out of 18 teams), the Cruisers had to be happy that ten of the twelve
wrestlers that traveled to Tiffin placed in the top 6 in their weight
class. Only one other team in the
tournament that had more placers, Toledo Central Catholic.
However, the Cruisers can
boast about having the most champions at the tournament. Four of our
wrestlers competed in the championship matches, and four came home with 1st
Place.
Placing for the Cruisers
112 Mark Wilson 6th 125 Matt Mossor 1st 135 Ian Badger 6th
140 Tim Weidner 4th 145 Tommy Cunningham
1st 152
Trevor Witt 4th
171 - Ben Trujillo 1st
189 Matt Ray 5th 215 Garrett Selfinger 5th

Highlights of the Tournament:
Matt Mossor became
Groveport-Madison first ever three-time winner of this Tournament!
Tim Weidner passed the 50+
varsity wins mark at this Tournament!
Tommy Cunningham and Matt
Mossor both passed the impressive 125+ varsity wins at the Tournament!
Trevor Witt pins the Lexington
152 pound wrestler for a personal victory!!

Groveport Wins
Dual Meet!!
Groveport 45
Pickerington North 25
The Cruisers traveled to Pickerington North on the
23rd to compete against the Pathers wrestling team in Groveport
first dual meet of the season. Due to illness, the Crusiers had to make some
adjustments in the line-up. Several wrestlers bumped up a weight class to
fill in weight classes. But a couple of key performances lead the Groveport
Wrestlers to the victory!
Highlight of the event:
Garrett Selfingers Pin at Heavyweight. Garrett was down on
points early in his match. He continued
to fight back to make the score close before PINNING his way to victory!!
|
Winning for the Cruisers
125 C. Mullins by forfeit
130 Mossor by pin
135 Badger by pin
140 Weidner by decision
145 Cunningham by pin
171 Lovings by pin
275 Selfinger by pin
Other Key Performance:
Although Trujillo did not win, he bumped up a
weight class to wrestle the #2 ranked wrestler in the area. Even though he
was giving up almost 20 pounds, he wrestled a strong match and only lost by
2.

While
the varsity had the weekend off, the JV team traveled to Mt. Gilead to
compete against other JV teams from Watkins, Pickerington Central, Dublin
Scioto, etc. While only taking 8 wrestlers, every wrestler won at least one
match to help the Cruisers come home with the Championship Trophy.

The Cruiser Varsity wrestling team traveled to the
Raider Rumble held in Union, Kentucky.
This was a 10-team pool tournament that included quality teams such
as:
South Oldham 2003 team State
Champions
Campbell
County, Ryle, and LaRue County - all of which place in the top 10 as a
team at the 2003 state tournament
and Grissom 2003 team State Runners-Up
in Alabama.
Due to the flu and other circumstances, the Cruisers
traveled with only 10 varsity wrestlers and returned with 10 tournament
placers. Including the most individual champions of any team there. Even with
depleted numbers, the wrestlers still managed to finish the tournament in 3rd
place as team, only 16 points out of first place.
Again, the team made a statement by recording 25
pins, 2 technical falls, and racking up 313 ½ team points. And, for the
second week in a row, the team returns with the award for the Most
Outstanding Wrestler.

that allowed eliminated wrestlers to still earn points for their team, the Cruisers
